Homemade Coconut Chips Recipe – Baked not toasted

I first came across these chips in the Thailand food section of a supermarket. They were available in various flavors like chocolate, caramel, sweet chili, etc. Purchased a few packets of these coconut chips and fell in love with how delicious it was. I knew they were easy to make with few ingredients as they tasted crisp with the real coconut flavor and minimal seasoning

In India, these packaged bites or coconut flakes are pretty expensive. Their so easy to make and works out cheaper when done at home. That’s where I decided to try these in my kitchen

Ingredients To Make Homemade Coconut Chips or flakes

Fresh Coconut

Fresh coconut is the most important ingredients (of course) While buying fresh coconut (not tender coconut) lookout for smaller sizes. The flesh in the smaller coconuts is more tender as compared to the big ones. Break open the coconut, remove the outer shell and the outer brown skin of the coconut using a knife. Wash the coconut pieces. Next, using a vegetable peeler, peel off coconut strips which look like chips. Use these strips to make this nutty snack

Sugar & Salt

These are essential seasonings that add in flavor to these chips. In my video, I’ve used castor sugar and regular cooking salt. But you can even use coconut sugar if you’d like that. Coconut sugar also adds to some caramelized color and flavor to the chips

Coconut Oil

So, coconut oil brings in more flavor, it blends with the seasoning and makes sure it’s applied evenly all around these nutty strips before baking

Toasted Or Baked Coconut Chips?

You can either toast fresh coconut strips over the gas on medium heat constantly tossing it or simply bake them in the oven.

I prefer baking these. Baking coconut chips gives a beautiful golden brown color to the chips. All you need to do is bake these at 120 degrees C for about 2 hours or less, making sure you toss it occasionally during the baking process

Variations and Flavors
