With no cooking and just a few ingredients, this easy homemade pizza sauce recipe can be prepared in 5 minutes and is way better than anything you can buy in the store.
I'll admit, before today I was always in the crowd of just buying store-bought pizza sauce for any of my pizzas that needed a red sauce.
I just thought making a homemade red sauce was just too much work... that was until I realized you could make a super tasty pizza sauce at home without actually cooking anything and just a few ingredients that you might already have in your fridge.
If you are like us or most Americans for that matter, and have pizza once a week, this should be the only sauce you use moving forward. Trust me when I say it is the best homemade pizza sauce you can make.
If you're looking for a pizza to try it on, then this hot honey-drizzled salami pizza is perfect for it! Or even a an easy appetizer like these homemade pizza rolls.

Difference Between Pizza Sauce and Spaghetti Sauce
Contrary to what you think there are differences between the two.
- Spaghetti sauce has higher water content which can lead to a watery pizza which you don't want.
- Pizza sauce is thicker because of the tomato paste which allows it to spread easier.
- Pizza sauce usually has more spices and herbs which leads to more flavor.
How Long Will the Pizza Sauce Last?
If you store in an airtight container or jar, it will last in the fridge for 1 week or in the freezer for up to a year.
Tips for Great Homemade Pizza
- Use Great Dough: While you can buy some dough from the store, I recommend making this no-knead pizza dough. You just make it the night before and light it rise for 24 hours before using.
- Spread Sauce Evenly: You will read a variety of opinions on sauce, but I'm a firm believer in lightly spreading the pizza sauce evenly. A sauce should compliment the pizza, but not be the star.
- Use a Pizza Stone: Place the pizza stone in the oven 8″ from the broiler element. Turn the oven to 500°F. You want to place the pizza stone in a cold oven, otherwise it could crack. The pizza stone holds heat which allows you to get a golden brown crust on the bottom.
- Broil Pizza: Leave the pizza stone in the oven once it reaches 500°F for at least 30 minutes, but preferably an hour. When you are ready to make the pizza turn the broiler on. Transfer the pizza to the stone and bake for 4-5 minutes or until the top is bubbly and the bottom is golden brown.
Pro Tips/Recipe Notes
- If you can't find tomato sauce, diced tomatoes works as well.
- While I make this with dried herbs, you can use fresh. You just need to triple the amount of each herb as they aren't as potent.
- You can omit the sugar if you don't like a slightly sweet sauce.
