A Spanish Sweet Treat Recipe

Churros are so delicious. It is one of those must take every time we visit Spain. Even in Spain, they are made in different ways. They are made from a thick batter-like dough.

It resembles doughnuts but also sticky cinnamon buns at least the taste, not the way they look. Whereas doughnuts are made with dough, churros are made with a thick batter. Just like with doughnuts, fried churros puff up.

They originate from Spain and Portugal but can be found predominately in Spain. In Spain, you eat them for breakfast and you see lots of breakfast bars where you can order them.

Churros are served plain, without sugar or chocolate. You can find thin knotted versions but you can also find churros that are made in a circle or a thick variety called Porras.

When you order churros in the South of Spain in Andalucia you’ll get a different type. These are thinner without any ridges on them.

No, churros are not gluten-free, unfortunately. It contains wheat or all-purpose flour so not suited if you are gluten intolerant. You can try to make these with gluten-free flour.

The consistency of the churros may vary compared to when made with all-purpose flour. You can look for gluten-free flour that contains sorghum four.

How To Store Churros?

To be honest Spanish churros taste best fresh right after you fried them. But if you have leftover churros there are several ways to store them:

  • Room temperature – when you fry the churros you can keep them in an airtight container outside the fridge for 2 days or in the fridge for up to 4 days
  • Refrigerate – if you want to eat these within two days store the dough in a piping bag in the fridge. This prevents the batter from going dry. Let the batter get to room temperature first and fry them
  • Freeze – you can freeze churros but do so unbaked. Either pipe the churros in the length and shape them the way you want. Then put the unfried churros in an airtight container or between parchment paper in a Ziploc bag. Now when you want to use them, fry them in hot oil. You do not need to thaw them first

How To Reheat Churros?

If you have leftover churros and want to reheat them it is best to not cover them in sugar or melted chocolate.

You have several ways to reheat them:

  • Oven – you can reheat churros in the oven. Heat the oven to 350℉/175℃ and put them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Heat for 3 to 5 minutes or until warm
  • Air Fryer – you can also reheat them in an Air Fryer. Heat the Air Fry to 325℉/163℃ for 3 minutes. Put the churros in the Air Fryer basket preferably on parchment paper so no leftover sugar can stick to the wire of the basket. Heat for 2 to 3 minutes or until warm. Shake halfway through
  • Microwave – you can reheat them in the microwave but be aware that all that crispness of the fried churros will be gone. In the microwave, they will go soft. Microwave for 30 seconds and check to see if they are warm, repeat if necessary

Both contain fewer calories and less fat. They are still very easy to make and just as delicious as these fried churros.
