Recipe video:
Lately I have been into making homemade juices, especially the ones I grew up drinking. One of those recipes I grew up on was tamarind juice. So, I have to share this quick tamarind juice recipe.
During the summer, nothing quenches your thirst better than a nice cold glass of a homemade juice. I know the summer is upon us and I just have to share this deliciously quick recipe.
The best part of this juice is the fact that it carries a lot of health benefits (Vitamin C, Calcium, Reduce inflammation…). I loved the fact that I can enjoy something and it has a positive effect on my body.
Tamarinds are grown in Asia and in the Caribbean, basically in almost all tropical places. I remember sitting under my aunt’s big tamarind tree and eating them. Usually in the Caribbean, tamarinds are sour compare to the ones in Asia.
However, you shouldn’t just limit yourself to making tamarind juice. You can make jams, sauces, tamarind balls… But in this recipe, we will use them for a juice.
TIPS & TRICKS:
- Tamarinds: obviously the most important ingredient in this recipe. However, fresh tamarind may not be available in most cities/countries so tamarind pulp is the next best thing. The instructions will remain the same except the deseeding part.
- Spices: I love adding spices to my juice recipe because of the kick it gives. I used fresh ginger but ground ginger works perfectly, the reason I used fresh ginger was because I wanted to have bits of ginger while I sipped on my drink.
- Lime: perfect for a little flavor and citrus. But you can substitute the lime for lemon.
I hope you enjoy the recipe.
Now, let’s get into it.
Quick Tamarind Juice
Ingredients
- 1 lb Fresh tamarind (about 20-22)
- 6 cups Cold water
- 1 cup Warm water
- 1/2 cup Granulated sugar
- 1/4 tsp Ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp Ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp Ground allspice
- Juice of a lime
Instructions
Deseeding the tamarind:
- Remove the hard shell and the strings from the pulp on the inside.
- Place the deseeded tamarind into a bowl.
- Repeat this step until all the tamarinds are deseeded.
Soaking the tamarind:
- Cover the deseeded tamarind with the cup of tamarind and let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
- Once the water is cool enough, use your hands to break apart the pulp from the seeds.
- When all the pulp are removed from the seeds, strain the mixture into a pitcher or another mixing bowl. You may need to repeat the straining process because some pulp may still be on the seeds.
Assembly:
- Once everything is strained, stir in the spices, lime juice and water. Mix everything together perfectly and enjoy.
