I like ravioli. I usually grab a bag every time I’m at ALDI because it’s a cheap and easy dinner. Well, usually easy. I usually just boil water, throw the frozen ravioli in, strain, then top with olive oil, grated parmesan, and herbs. Unless I’m in the mood for marinara sauce and then I make our Baked Ravioli recipe.

If you haven’t had baked ravioli ever in your life, you need to run out to the store to grab a bag right now.

It’s a delicious idea that you didn’t know you were missing out on. But once you have Baked Ravioli, you’ll never want to go back to the easy boiled ravioli.

That is fine in a rush, but this is fine for company.

Take off the foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until the cheese on top is melted.

If you want, as soon as it comes out of the oven, you could sprinkle some fresh chopped or dried herbs on top (like Italian seasoning), but you don’t have to.

Serve warm.

Baked Ravioli Variations:

Once you’ve mastered this Baked Ravioli recipe, you can change it up with these variations:

Baked Ravioli with extra greens:

Add some vegetables to your baked ravioli by adding a layer of spinach between the layers of ravioli and kale. If you use fresh spinach you don’t need to cook it first, but if you are using frozen spinach, you’ll want to use that.

Meat-Filled Baked Ravioli:

Cook ground beef in a pan with chopped onion and garlic until the meat is completely cooked through. Drain it. Split the ground beef mixture in half and add layers of it on top of the ravioli layers.

If you don’t use beef, you can use ground turkey or ground chicken instead.

Pesto Baked Ravioli:

Instead of using marinara sauce, you can use pesto in baked ravioli. Just substitute the same amount of pesto for the marinara. You can purchase pesto online or use one one our homemade pesto recipe (homemade kale pesto or homemade asparagus pesto) to make it.

What Can You Serve With Baked Ravioli?

Baked Ravioli is pretty dense, so you want to serve it with a light side dish and a nice crunchy bread to soak up the extra sauce. Our favorite sides for baked ravioli are:

Baked Ravioli: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you bake ravioli instead of boiling?

Absolutely! That’s exactly how the ravioli is cooked in this Baked Ravioli recipe.

Can you bake frozen ravioli?

You can. This Baked Ravioli recipe uses frozen ravioli baked in the oven. You don’t have to cook it before adding it to the pan.

Do you have to use a block of mozzarella cheese?

When you’re making a recipe where cheese needs to melt, shredding (or in this case, slicing) it yourself is the way to go.

Bagged shredded cheese makes recipes so much easier because all you have to do is open the bag and sprinkle it on top. But that cheese has preservatives in it to assure the cheese doesn’t clump together in the bag. Those preservatives prevent the cheese from melting.

A block of cheese doesn’t have those preservatives added. So a block of cheese melts better. And in a recipe like this Baked Ravioli parmesan, where you want the cheese to melt, a block is best.

If you have a good cheese grater, you can shred cheese with ease.

Luckily, for this recipe, you can just use a knife to rough slice the block of mozzarella cheese. It doesn’t have to be perfect.

What seasoning could you add?

We don’t use any additional seasoning in our Baked Ravioli, but that’s because we use a really flavorful marinara sauce that’s packed with seasoning (Pete runs Rita’s Wooden Spoon, small batch marinara sauce business, so would you think anything else is going on in our kitchen?).

But, if you’re using a bland marinara sauce, you can season it with Italian seasoning, chopped garlic, fresh basil, and a little salt to bring out the flavors.

Then, before you serve this Baked Ravioli, sprinkle some additional Italian seasoning on top. That will give each plate a pretty presentation and a little bit more taste.

How do you store leftover Baked Ravioli?

The easiest way to store leftover Baked Ravioli is to put the foil back on top of the pan and put the entire pan in the fridge. It will last overnight this way.

If you don’t want to have the leftovers immediately, put the leftover Baked Ravioli into an airtight container and store it in the fridge for three to five days.

How do you reheat leftovers?

If you left the Baked Ravioli in the pan it originally cooked in, put the entire pan in the oven at 350 F for about 15 minutes until the Baked Ravioli is heated completely.

If you took it out of the pan, the best way to heat it is to put a serving in a frying pan and heat it on the stove. When you’re reheating it, make sure to put a lid on top of the pan. That will steam it and help it cook more evenly. It will also prevent sauce from popping all over your stove.

You could also microwave portions of Baked Ravioli for 90 seconds, but that’s the last resort method because it comes out drier than the other two methods.

Can you freeze Baked Ravioli?

If you have too much Baked Ravioli, you can store it in the freezer for about six months. Defrost it in the fridge overnight before heating and serving.

Can you make Baked Ravioli ahead of time?

If you need to, you can make a tray of Baked Ravioli ahead of time. Assemble it, cover it with foil, and keep it in the fridge overnight.

Since you’re not cooking frozen ravioli anymore, you may need to adjust the cooking time to compensate for that.

We haven’t done it this way, so if you do, please let us know.

Can you use homemade ravioli?

We have a great homemade ravioli that we love and make often. But we’ve never tried to use it in this recipe.

Homemade ravioli shouldn’t be a problem in this, but I would assume you would need to either adjust your cooking time because homemade pasta cooks very quickly or you would want to freeze your homemade ravioli before adding it to this recipe.

If you do make it with fresh, homemade pasta, let us know in the comments so we can update this section.
