Delicious sweet and sour flavors combine together to make this frothy and beautiful cocktail I call the Sam Ross Sour Cocktail. It is inspired by the creator of the Paper Airplane and Penicillin cocktail.

We have been messing around with the Penicillin cocktail for a short while and that has sent me down the Sam Ross rabbit hole to come up with the Sam Ross Sour Cocktail. No, it was not invented by Sam Ross like the Penicillin was, but inspired by him. This is a tasty, colorful, and fun Cocktail and totally worth the effort to make.

Egg Whites in Cocktails

This is the first drink I am sharing that calls for egg whites. Egg whites, when combined with citrus, can produce a fabulous mouthfeel to the drink and add a luxurious layer of foam to the top of the drink. It really is a beautiful thing.

Elements of a Raw Egg Cocktail

Pretty simple, separate the yolk from an egg or buy egg whites in a carton. Usually, these drinks come with a citrus like lemon or lime. While you do get some froth without the citrus, it works much much better with.

Dry Shake vs Wet Shake

To get the most froth for the buck, make your egg white cocktails in two steps. First, perform a dry shake. That is, add all ingredients to a shaker without ice. Vigorously shake that sans ice. Then, open up that shaker and do a second round of shaking with ice. This is the wet shake. If you perform this two-step process you are going to get some beautiful frothy cocktails.

Raw eggs?

Yes, they are raw and with raw eggs, there are always some safety concerns, so read up on it and just make sure you know what you are getting into.

Why Sam Ross?

As indicated, he invented the Penicillin cocktail that was covered here and also the Paper Airplane that we recently shared. Because of Ross’ involvement, I picked up a bottle of Aperol and started messing with it. So, here I am… with the Sam Ross Sour Cocktail. I hope I do him justice.

What is Aperol?

Aperol is a brand name for a type of Amaro. Amaro is an Italian herbal liqueur. Another version of an Amaro is Campari, which is traditionally used in a Negroni. Both were used in our Paper Airplane cocktail and there is definitely differences in flavor among different Amari. Aperol is a very sweet beverage and a great way to make a sweet cocktail.

Description

This Sam Ross Sour Cocktail takes some elements from another Sam Ross cocktail, the Paper Airplane. This delicious drink is both fun to make and tastes spectacular!


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 1/2 ounces gin
  • 1/2 ounce Aperol
  • 1/2 ounce fresh grenadine
  • 3/4 ounces lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients into a shaker with NO Ice
  2. Shake vigorously for a good 10-15 seconds
  3. Add Ice to shaker
  4. Shake again for another 10-15 seconds
  5. Strain into coupe glass
  6. Optionally, garnish with Luxardo cherry and/or lemon twist.

  1. I’ve never tried a cocktail with raw egg whites, but I’m definitely curious. This one looks so elegant and I love the frothy top! Looks like a great cocktail for a dinner party!






    1. The egg really can give a cocktail a special something. That frothy top, but also gives a nice richness tot he the drink
