Made with multiple liquors, the long island iced tea is the kind of mixed drink that you will only need one of — it is strong!

Made with multiple liquors, the long island iced tea is the kind of mixed drink that you will only need one of -- it is strong!

You may be surprised to learn that despite its name, the long island iced tea doesn’t actually contain any iced tea.

Crazy, right?

It does, however, look like iced tea.

But don’t let this drink’s innocent “iced tea” appearance fool you. It is very strong.

The acidity of the lime juice and cola work to combat the drink tasting as strong as it is, so be careful. You have been warned.

How much alcohol is in a Long Island Iced Tea?

A lot.

Each long island iced tea has about 2 full shots of liquor in it — 1/2 oz vodka, 1/2 oz gin, 1/2 oz rum, and 1/4 oz triple sec to be exact.

How to Make a Long Island Iced Tea

Vodka, gin, white rum, triple sec, limeade, and cola are combined to make this classic mixed drink.

First, mix all the ingredients except the cola in an ice-filled cocktail shaker.

Next, pour into a highball glass. Then, top with cola and give a gentle stir.

Finally, garnish with a lemon wedge and serve.

What if I don’t have a cocktail shaker?

Ideally, you should use a cocktail shaker to mix the drink. However, if you don’t have a cocktail shaker on hand you could mix the drink right in the glass using a spoon.

Substitutions

You can use lime juice from a fresh lime in place of the limeade if you prefer.
