What You Need For This Recipe
If you want to make this sweet apple empanada recipe, be sure to put the following ingredients on your grocery list:
- Banana – use a ripe banana
- Apples – you can use granny Smith apples for apple pie filling
- Raisins
- Egg – a large egg
- Flour – to dust the surface so you can roll out the dough
Make yourself:
- Dough – you can make this empanada dough or buy at the store
You can find all the ingredient amounts and instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
How To Make Sweet Empanadas
- Start with the apple pie filling which is easy to make and will take you 10 minutes to put together. Then make your empanada dough fresh or use a batch of frozen dough.
- Mash the banana and stir it through the apple pie filling.
- The same applies to the raisins. You can put them in warm water for about 10 minutes so they will double in size.
- You can easily freeze your empanada dough so I usually make enough for two recipes and store the remaining dough in the freezer.
- That way you have empanada dough available when you need it. Refrigerate the dough before you roll your dough into a big square with a little flour.
- Cut about 10 empanada discs. Put them in the empanada maker or fill them in the apple pie filling with banana.
- Sprinkle some raisins on top of the filling and squeeze the empanada shut.
- Either close the edge by hand, press the edge close with a fork, or with the empanada maker.
- Whisk the egg and brush the empanadas with the egg wash. Preheat your oven to 400℉/200℃ and put the sweet empanadas on a baking sheet.
- Let them bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Take them out of the oven and let them cool slightly.
- Be cautious because the filling can be really hot.

08/13/2019 at 7:44 pmHi Mireille,
You made great job. Thank you. Please kindly tell me this apple filling is a base and you mix it with banana to get banana empenada an if you mix it with say “cherry ” we get cherry empenada and so far…

08/13/2019 at 8:49 pmHi Egean,
Glad you like this recipe. You are right the apple filling is the base and I’ve added mashed banana through the apple filling. You can indeed mix it with other fruits instead of banana.

If I understand correctly you have 2 questions regarding egg in this recipe.
Regarding the empanada dough you need 1 whole egg in the dough. You whisk the whole egg and add it to the dough (take a look at the recipe video with the step by step instructions you can see me add the egg).
In this sweet empanada recipe, you need an additional egg to brush the empanadas before you put them in the oven. It helps to give the empanadas a nice golden color.
I hope this helps.

08/21/2021 at 9:15 pmHi Mireille,
I was wondering why a banana is added, for more filling and structure? We made apple pie filling and and tasted a bit mixed with a bit of banana before proceeding and we were a bit unsure about the flavor profile. Have you ever omitted banana before? We were also wondering if carmel would be a fun addition to the filling?
Thanks,
Becky

08/21/2021 at 9:42 pmHi Becky,
I add a ripe banana for some additional sweetness to the filling. However, you can omit the banana and only use the apple pie filling which is sweet as well. Caramel is a great addition to the filling! Once you baked the empanadas you can also use the caramel to decorate them.
