Easy Matcha Smoothie Recipe

I can talk so matcha about matcha. Sorry I had to do that. Guys, I’ve been drinking matcha before it was hot-cha. Okay, I’ll stop. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen me making my matcha at home and proudly posting my matcha smoothie on IG stories. 

If you are wondering what the heck matcha powder is and why so many people prefer it nowadays to other caffeinated drinks, this is the blog post for you. 

What Is Matcha Powder 

Matcha green tea powder has been around in Japan since the 17th century. It was used by Monks and Samori and is deeply rooted in the Japanese culture. Matcha is made from finely, ground up tea leaves.

Think of all the amazing benefits that green tea has and now imagine if you were to ingest the whole green tea leaf instead of just steeping the tea bag. It is naturally full of amazing antioxidants, vitamin C, and l-theanine.

Description

This 4-ingredient, less than 5-minute Matcha Smoothie recipe is full of antioxidants, is easy to make, and delicious. Let’s get to it!


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1⁄2 cups unsweetened coconut milk or macadamia milk. 
  • 1 cup organic baby spinach
  • 1  whole banana (frozen bananas are best)
  • 2 teaspoons matcha powder (my fave one)
  • 1 cup ice (optional, but recommend it if your banana is not frozen)

Instructions

Just add your ingredients into a blender and blend until creamy and smooth. Yummmmmm.

Buying Matcha Powder

  1. The most important way to ensure a good matcha experience is to start with quality powder.
  2. Buy matcha powder in a tin container rather than a bag because it needs to be kept dark, and cold. 
  3. And to the above point, keep your matcha powder in the fridge for optimal freshness. 

To start, I recommend that you can purchase Culinary Grade matcha used in cooking, baking and making everyday beverage blends like this smoothie.

But, if you want the best, get the Ceremonial Grade powder, used for Japanese tea ceremonies. It is higher-quality powder with different flavor notes based upon the region of origin. Just like how wine varies from region. But, the best matcha powder is from Japan.

Use Nut Milk 

To get the best health benefit from your matcha smoothie, use dairy-free, nut milk! Sorry, it is way healthier than cow’s milk. I’ve found that the best nut milk for a matcha smoothie is either coconut milk, hemp milk or macadamia milk.  I’m not a big fan of almond milk for this matcha smoothie. It just doesn’t go well with matcha’s umami flavor.
