Now, this is not my normal type of post but my son and his girlfriend visited me over Christmas and insisted on Jen and I trying some drunken tomatoes. “What are drunken tomatoes?” I hear you cry. Well simply put, they are little cherry or plum tomatoes soaked in vodka!
I think it must be a young thing…
I, of course, protested that drinking was not a healthy way of life, and this is not good for us etc. etc. However, having been informed that by taking the vodka with the tomato we would, in effect, be cancelling our the alcohol with 1 of our 5 per day of vegetable or fruit portions, I succumbed ????. Well, it was Christmas after all…
Plus, making them is so easy…
1. Gather the ingredients together
Well, this simply means washing some tomatoes and grabbing a bottle of vodka.
2. Prepare the tomatoes
This is the only time-consuming bit. Just take a cocktail stick and prick each tomato around 20-30 times all over around. These holes are how the vodka gets into the tomato.
3. Soak the tomatoes in vodka
Now just pour the vodka over the tomatoes and leave to soak, or marinade. There is no set time for this but I would recommend at least 3 hours, and overnight if you can.
4. Serve the drunken tomatoes with a pinch of salt and an appropriate drinking game
Once the tomatoes are sufficiently drunk, so to speak, strain them and place in a bowl for serving. The excess vodka can be used for your morning after Bloody Mary!!
We searched online and found some form of playing card drinking game which meant losers had to eat the tomatoes. But these little alcoholic beauties can just be served as a surprise to start the evening off.
But remember, always drink sensibly!! ????
