The ultimate Christmas cookie exchange treat: Peppermint Chocolate Chip Cookies use little bits of candy canes for a subtle, delicious flavor

Peppermint Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

I’m all about hints of mint when it comes to holiday baking.

I don’t want to fee like I’m biting into a big hunk of toothpaste. I want something balanced with other flavors – like this buttery, chocolatey chip cookie with just a bit of delicious candy cane flavor!

Plus, how cute do these looks with those little pops of red?

These chocolate chip cookies take just a bit of extra work because they do require brown butter for that delicious buttery flavor, but it is so worth it. (And really, by “extra work” you just need to melt the butter and caramelize it slightly to help it’s flavor shine.)

This is a delicious cookie recipe to serve to holiday guests or bring along to a cookie exchange. I can’t wait to share a couple with Ella when she gets home, along with a big glass of milk!

Peppermint Chocolate Chip Cookie Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup butter (browned)
  • 4 Tablespoons shortening
  • 1 Tablespoon molasses
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt (plus extra for sprinkling on top, optional)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1-2 Tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 2 candy canes, smashed into pieces

Tip: you can swap out the milk chocolate chips and candy cane bits for peppermint chocolate morsels, available in grocery stores around Christmastime.

How to Make Peppermint Chocolate Chip Cookies

First, brown your butter. Place in a saucepan over medium heat and allow to melt, then cook until it starts to get darker and the milk solids begin to turn caramel or chocolate-colored. Remove from heat and allow to cool before proceeding with recipe.

Preheat oven to 350F

Once the butter is cool, but still liquid, cream the sugars with the slightly cooled butter, and then whip in shortening before adding the molasses, vanilla, and eggs. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, combine the dry ingredients. Add half to the wet ingredients. Incorporate fully before adding the second half of dry ingredients.

Finally, add the chocolate chips and candy cane bits.

Use a cookie scoop to portion out onto a lined baking tray, spacing the cookies out by 3″, and bake for 10-12 minutes until the cookies are spread out and golden brown.

Cool for two minutes on the cookie sheet before transferring to a cooling rack.

  1. Your recipe doesn’t mention Molasses in the ingredients how much do you put in and what shortening do you use……please ……….Moira

    1. Hi Moira,
Sorry for the confusion! I use 1 Tablespoon just to give it a taste, and I tend to buy Tenderflake or Crisco shortening – whatever is on sale!
I hope you love the cookies!
