Burrito Seasoning Ingredients
To make this seasoning recipe go into your pantry get out all of the spices that you have, and mix up the following ingredients:
- Cumin – adds an earthy flavor to your burritos
- Paprika – you can use smoky paprika in this recipe
- Garlic powder – adds flavor to your burrito mix
- Cayenne pepper or hot Chili powder – because this seasoning needs some heat you add cayenne pepper or hot Chili powder (use the one ingredient spice, not the Chili powder mix)
- Dried oregano – a staple in Mexican spice mixes
- Salt – to add flavor
- Black pepper – if the mix needs a little bit more of a kick add black pepper
Note that the full ingredients list, including measurements, can be found in the recipe card below.
How To Make Burrito Seasoning
- To make this recipe have all the ingredients ready. This seasoning recipe calls for a little heat. You can use either Cayenne pepper or hot Chili powder.
- Be aware that there is a different Chili powder used in American recipes which is usually a spice mix in itself whereas in Europe Chili powder is a one ingredient hot spice.
- So, if you have hot chili powder in your kitchen pantry you can use it else use Cayenne pepper or chili flakes.
- Put all of the measured spices in a bowl and stir it through. Stir for at least a minute to make certain all of the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
- You want to prevent that one tablespoon is spicier than the second tablespoon just because you did not stir it through.
- Put the homemade burrito seasoning mix in a mason jar glass jar and store it in a dry dark place like a kitchen cabinet.

How To Use Burrito Spice Mix
To use this seasoning in your recipes, start by adding 1 tablespoon of seasoning to your meat, poultry, or pork. Depending on your taste you can add more.
As a rule of thumb, I add 1 tablespoon per half a pound of meat, pork, or poultry.
Homemade Burrito Seasoning Recipe
When seasoning your burrito meat, you need something extra because burritos are a whole meal in a tortilla. The meats, vegetables, and rice are rolled into a tortilla.
So do not let the main ingredients get lost in the tortilla you need a good seasoning mix. It is cheaper to make burrito seasoning from scratch because burrito spice mix is not that widely available in a grocery store.
It is very easy to find seasoning for:
You can also make all of these seasoning mixes yourself.
How To Store Burrito Seasoning
The best way to store this burrito spice mix is in a glass jar. You can use small glass spice jars or small plastic food containers. Store the spice blend in a dry and dark place like your pantry or a kitchen cabinet or pantry for at least 6 months.
Do not store it in direct sunlight, on a radiator, or near a stovetop. When you store spice blends in direct sunlight or heat the seasoning will turn hard and change color.
This affects the shelf life of your seasoning and the taste.

I use about 2 tbsp of seasoning per pound of beef. When the meat is cooked I always have a little taste and add if needed.

03/23/2023 at 12:31 amCan you omit cayenne pepper?
Mireille
03/23/2023 at 10:26 amSandy,
Yes, you can omit cayenne pepper. The burrito seasoning will be less spicy but if you do not like spicy you can leave it out.
