Gluten-free appetizers get a fun makeover with this sweet potato rounds with roasted grapes and goat cheese appetizer!
As summertime approaches quickly and the weather starts getting warmer, all I can think about is appetizers! There are an abundance of wedding showers, Memorial Day barbecues, and summertime potlucks galore.
What do all of those have in common? Appetizers. Sometimes finding an appetizer to bring to an event that is gluten-free can be a little challenging. Most appetizers involve some sort of bread or cracker.
However, instead of bread, I love using sweet potatoes to serve as the base of my finger food! Sweet potatoes are extremely adaptable and go with many flavors, from sweet to savory, making them the perfect substitute in recipes traditionally involving bread or crackers.

This sweet potato rounds with roasted grapes and goat cheese recipe is a spin on a crostini, which is typically a grilled or toasted bread served with toppings. The flavors we’re pairing today are quite simple to put together, but come together to form an impressive bite.
Crispy sweet potato rounds, creamy goat cheese, sweet honey, and juicy roasted grapes. That’s really all it takes to form this gluten-free appetizer. Sweet and savory and full of flavor. If you ask me, the roasted grapes are definitely the star of this appetizer!

Have you ever roasted grapes before in the oven? If not, you’re missing out! I started roasting grapes about 5 or so years ago and it’s one of my favorite ways to eat them! Seriously, something magical happens to grapes when you roast them in the oven.
The outside bursts a bit and gets blistered and caramelized. The inside is soft with a jam-like consistency. The flavor is reminiscent of a wine flavored jam. You can’t help but feel just a little bit sophisticated while eating roasted grapes.
Your guests will be so impressed that you even thought of such a technique to use with grapes. But really, you and I both know how easy it was. All it takes is a few moments to toss your grapes with oil and seasoning and they’re off to work their magic in the oven.
You can use them to top pizza, serve on a cheese plate, or even in a fancy salad. But here we’re using them to top our sweet potato rounds with goat cheese and a drizzle of honey. Swoon.

How to Roast Grapes in the Oven

The basics for roasting grapes in the oven are just that – very basic. Just toss any number of grapes — here we’re using two cups — with avocado oil or another high smoke point oil.
Sprinkle on some seasonings such as salt, thyme, rosemary, etc. Place in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake at a high temperature (from 400F-425F) for 15-25 minutes.
We are roasting our grapes at 400F because we want to also roast our sweet potato rounds at the same time. You’ll grapes are ready when they start to burst, have slightly blistered skin and have shrunk in size.

Tips for Making Sweet Potato Rounds with Roasted Grapes and Goat Cheese

  • A skinny sweet potato with even width is key here. You want your sweet potato to cook evenly so having a sweet potato that is approximately the same width all the way across is ideal. Also, since these are appetizers, we want small bites so skinnier sweet potatoes work better. Leave the larger sweet potatoes for baked potatoes!
  • Make sure you cook the sweet potatoes long enough so that they are sturdy enough to pick up. You want the outside to be browned and crispy. If you cut your potatoes any larger than 1/4 inches wide then it will take longer for your sweet potatoes to cook, which is fine, just be sure to watch the oven.
  • I like to use avocado oil, but you can also use other oils with high smoke points (since we’re roasting at 400F). Other oils you can try are olive oil, sunflower oil, or grapeseed oil.
  • If you don’t like goat cheese, try substituting ricotta or bleu cheese. Dairy-free? I recommend Kite Hill dairy-free ricotta. SO GOOD!

  • 1 tbsp avocado oil
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup goat cheese (crumbled)
  • 1-2 tbsp honey

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400F.
  • Slice sweet potatoes into 1/4 inch rounds. You can leave the skin on if you wish, just make sure to rinse and dry the sweet potatoes thoroughly.
  • Toss sweet potatoes with avocado oil, salt and ground cinnamon. Arrange on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake in the oven at 400F for 30-40 minutes, flipping half way through, until sweet potatoes are tender on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside.
  • While the sweet potatoes are cooking, toss the grapes with avocado oil and pinch of salt. Arrange on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes, until grapes start to burst and shrink in size. You can roast the grapes at the same time as the sweet potato rounds.
  •  When the sweet potato rounds and grapes are finished roasting, remove from the oven. Place sweet potato rounds on a platter.
  • Top with about 1/2 tsp of goat cheese per sweet potato round, 2-3 roasted grapes, and a drizzle of honey. Serve immediately.
