What You Need For This Recipe
If you want to make this recipe, take the ingredients mentioned below as a starting point and work from there. I’m a huge proponent of making what you like so, by all means, adjust the measurements to your liking.
Check to see if you have the following spices in your cabinet:

- Oregano
- Cumin powder
- Garlic powder
- Cayenne pepper or Chile powder
- Onion powder
Note that the full ingredients list, including measurements, can be found in the recipe card below.
How To Make Chili Powder
- To make this seasoning recipe is easy. Measure the spices as mentioned in the recipe and put them in a bowl.
- As I didn’t have onion powder, I put dried onion in a pestle and mortar and turned it into onion powder.
- Stir all the ingredients thoroughly for at least a minute to make sure all the spices are blended well.
- Taste the chili powder to see if you like the combination. Not salt enough just add little increments at a time, stir, and taste.
- The same applies to the cayenne pepper, paprika, or cumin. Spoon and transfer the spice blend into a glass jar.
- Store it in a cool dark place and you can use this seasoning for months. This recipe yields up to 4 tablespoons of homemade chili powder.
If you use this seasoning regularly just multiply the recipe by 2 or 3 and you will have some extra.
Homemade Chili Powder Recipe
The first time I saw an American recipe that required chili powder I was surprised by the amount of chili it contained. Four tablespoons? That cannot be good. My initial thoughts were, that this has to be a typo in the measurements.
Here in the Netherlands when you use chili powder in a recipe it means the powder version of a chili which is very hot, like cayenne pepper powder.
I had no idea that the same name was used for chili powder seasoning. After some research, I found out that chili powder in a recipe means a mix of spices that is quite mild in heat.
Looking further I also found chili spices that I could buy in the store but these are very expensive. These chili packets contain a lot of salt that overpowers the flavor of the seasoning and that is not necessary.
So it is time to create your own and I will show you how to make chili powder yourself.

08/31/2021 at 12:09 amThis looks good! My family has been in the state of New Mexico since before it was the state of New Mexico. In the Southwest the pepper pod and it’s plain, dried, ground powder is referred to as chile and chile powder and the mix of chile powder and other spices (and the dish made with the mix) is called chili and chili powder. Unfortunately that distinction doesn’t seem to be widely used outside of the Southwest because it sure makes things easier.

08/31/2021 at 12:03 pmHi Kerrie,
Thank you for explaining the difference between the chile and chile powder in regard to the chili mix that is called chili powder! I think I made the proper distinction as I use chile powder as one of the ingredients in this chili powder recipe but it is an easy mistake to make.

09/01/2021 at 12:55 amI guess I didn’t read the whole thing. Thanks so much for getting back to me. It’s a little thing but it makes things so much clearer and I rarely see it outside of the southwest. So good on you for being a chile rock star! :o)
