Add the homemade tzatziki and you have a restaurant-worthy dish in the comfort of your own home! After making fluffy, soft pita bread a great filling was needed. What better way to stuff the perfect pita bread with some Greek gyros? So, are you ready to learn how to make Greek gyros pita bread? Let’s get started!
What You Need For This Recipe
For this gyros recipe, you need an extensive list of the following ingredients on your grocery list. Do not feel put off by it. You have this done in no time:
- Pork – use pork shoulder filet in this recipe
- Flatbread – you need pita bread
- Onion – white onion finely diced
- Red onion – small onion finely diced
- Red bell pepper – dice the sweet red bell pepper
- Garlic – fresh garlic
- Olive oil
- Water
- Sauce – you need tzatziki sauce to put on top of the pork
Instead of pita bread, you can also eat gyros with Greek pocketless gyro bread. You can also make pita bread without yeast.
For the marinade, I use the following spices:
- Cumin
- Paprika powder
- Chili powder
- Garlic powder
- Oregano
- Salt and Pepper to taste
Note that the full ingredients list, including measurements, can be found in the recipe card below.
How To Make Greek Gyros
- Start with the meat. Cut the pork shoulder into thin strips. Put all the spices in a small bowl and stir thoroughly.
- Then add the olive oil. Stir into a marinade and add to the pork shoulder.
- Combine the pork shoulder and marinade and let it rest in the refrigerator for half an hour. Then heat a large skillet with olive oil.
- Now pan-fry the gyros on high heat.
- Then add the white onion, red bell pepper, and garlic. Stir and let it go soft before you add water to the pan.
- Now you can let the meat simmer for half an hour. Add some water if required.
- While the meat is simmering warm your pita bread in a skillet for a couple of minutes or you can heat the pita in the oven.
- Wrap the pita bread in aluminum foil and heat the oven at 350℉/175℃ and warm for 5 to 7 minutes. This gyro requires a homemade tzatziki sauce.
- No worries it is one of the easiest dip sauces I ever made.
A Tasty Greek Dinner Dish
A simple but tasty recipe that you can’t go wrong with. Eat it with some potatoes or rice and you have a delicious meal.
This gyros recipe requires soft and tender meat like:
- Pork meat – is used the most for gyros
- Chicken – a great and protein-rich ingredient that will work great in gyros and used a lot as an alternative to pork meat
- Lamb meat – originally gyros are made with lamb meat
- Beef – also a great ingredient for gyros but found less often in gyros
Besides soft meat or poultry, you need tasty seasoning to get out the best flavor. In this recipe I just pork and homemade seasoning to flavor the pork.
Normally gyros are made from a cone-like stack of meat. Flat slices of meat. They are stacked vertically combined with a little fat. This is to get soft and tender meat.
The cone-like stack is heated by a broiler or rotisserie. When the meat is ready to serve strips of meat are shaved vertically from the stack of meat and warmed through in a skillet.
Today we are not stacking meat. That would require an army to eat it all. We do it slightly different so take a look.
How To Store Greek Gyros
You have several ways to store Greek Gyros. Let them cool completely before storing:
- Refrigerator – if you have leftover Greek gyros, you can store them in the fridge for up to 3 days. Put the cooled meat in an airtight food container. If you have leftover pita bread store it separately
- Freezer – want to store it longer you can store it in the freezer. Put the leftovers in a freezer-friendly food container or resealable bag and store it for up to 2 months
How To Reheat Greek Gyros
If you have made a big batch or leftover gyros you have several ways to reheat gyros meat:
- Cast-iron skillet – preheat your skillet to medium-hot and add 1 to 2 tablespoons of oil. Add the leftover gyros meat and move the meat around the pan to heat. Take off the heat and serve with pita bread or gyro bread
- Oven – you can also heat the gyro meat in the oven. Preheat the oven to 375℉/190℃ If you have a skillet put the leftover meat in the skillet and heat until warm. Stir the meat every couple of minutes
- Air Fryer – you can also use your Air Fryer to reheat your leftover gyros meat. Preheat to 350℉/175℃ with the cake barrel inside. Put the meat in a cake barrel and cover it with aluminum foil. Heat for 5 minutes and stir. Check to see if the meat is warm else extend the cooking time
- Microwave – you can also reheat the gyros in the microwave. Put the meat in a microwave-safe dish and cover the meat with a lid or plastic wrap. Heat for 2 minutes and check to see if the meat is warm else extend the cooking time
Other Recipes You Can Make With Pita Bread
If you have some more pita bread then you can make one of these recipes with it:
- Oven-baked chicken shawarma – easy to make with homemade shawarma seasoning and grilled in no time.
- Pita pizza with shrimp and salami – is one of the easiest pizza recipes you can make. These are fun to make with your kids and are great for a lunch or afternoon snack. One pita bread yields two pizzas so get creative with your toppings.
- Falafel burger with pita taco – you can make a delicious falafel burger with chickpea, chili pepper, spices, and garlic. Half a pita bread and you have two tacos. Add some onion, tomato, or sauce to turn it into a great lunch or dinner.
