How To Make Crisp Homemade Potato Chips

  1. So how do you make these homemade potato chips? The answer is, very easy. You start by taking a potato.
  2. One big potato is enough per person. Clean the outside with water. You can peel it but you do not necessarily have to.
  3. Then take a very sharp knife or a mandolin and cut the potato into thin slices. I prefer a mandolin because you get even potato slices. If you can cut a potato into even slices with a knife, by all means, you can use a knife.
  4. Then put really cold water in a large bowl and put all of the sliced potatoes in the bowl. Potatoes contain a lot of starch which makes potatoes sticky.
  5. The cold water helps remove the starch so it will not stick. Leave the potato in the cold water for a couple of minutes.
  6. Then put every slice on a paper towel and dry the slices. Then put parchment paper on a big dinner plate and line up the slices on the plate.
  7. Put the plate in the microwave and leave it in for 6 minutes at 900W. Depending on the power of your microwave you have to increase or reduce the length.
  8. Take the potato chips out of the microwave and you are ready to serve. You do not need any oil or cooking spray for this recipe.

Potato Chips Flavors

Natural potato chips taste great but if you want, you can add several different flavors to the chips e.g.:

Flavor after the microwave. However, you can also flavor the potato chips before you put them in the microwave. The flavors will most likely stick a little better to the moist potatoes.

Now take a bite and you will be surprised at the crisp, crunch of these homemade potato chips. Best of all you can enjoy guilt-free potato chips. How cool is that?

No Fat Chips

One of my favorite snacks is without a doubt, potato chips. If there is a bag of chips in my kitchen cabinet and I open it the bag will go empty.

Unfortunately, they contain tons of calories. But I have to keep on eating until there is no crumb left. This is not that strange. A little while back I saw a documentary that showed chip companies put what they call an eat-on flavor on their chips.

So even if you would like to stop the flavors on the chips make you keep on eating.

If for whatever reason you didn’t eat all of the chips and have leftovers that have gone stale do not throw them away just yet. Try to refresh the chips first and extend the shelf life.

Why You’ll Love No Fat Potato Chips

Think about all those calories you consume with just one bag. It is not uncommon that you eat 400 to 500 calories with 100 grams of chips alone.

To save me from falling into the chips trap I just do not buy chips anymore. But then I came across a simple recipe on the website of T Nation.

Showing how easy it is to make chips yourself. T Nation is a fitness website that also contains a lot of recipes, like this no-fat potato chip recipe.

The first time I tried to make them, my chips got stuck to the plate so I had to make some changes. The most important one was to use baking paper. So, with the second attempt, I nailed it and found the best way how to make potato chips.

To be honest these potato chips rock. Just compare the calorie count. A regular bag of chips contains 531 calories versus 76 calories for 100 grams of potato.

This recipe seriously rocks.

Hey, they look delicious and I can’t wait to try them, but I’m wondering, can you also prepare these in the oven? Do you have an idea how long it would take then?

      Hi Elise,

Glad to read you like these. I haven’t made these in the oven but I’m certain you can also prepare them in the oven. You may have to use some cooking spray to get them crispy. I would try to put the oven at 400℉ and bake for 7-10 minutes per side. As I haven’t tried it I would suggest you stay close to the oven check to see if you need to up the temperature or extend the cooking time.
