Pork Bao Buns Ingredients
To make this Asian recipe you need quite a few ingredients to put the following ingredients on your grocery list:
- Steamed Chinese buns
- Fricandeau pork or pork belly
- Brown sugar or palm sugar
- Onion
- Scallions
- Sweet soy sauce
- Hoisin sauce
- Sriracha sauce
- Honey
- Apple cider vinegar

How To Make Pork Bao Buns In An Oven
This recipe is so easy it takes about 5 minutes to put all the ingredients together. To make this recipe start by preheating a big pan and adding the water and sugar.
Stir to let the sugar dissolve in the water. Now add soy, hoisin, sriracha, honey, and apple cider vinegar. Stir to combine until dissolved.
When all the ingredients are combined add the onion and scallions. Stir again and let the chopped onion soften before you add the pork into the pan.
Turn the meat to coat it with the mixture in the pan. Now add the water and close the lid. Preheat the oven to 400℉/200℃.
Put the pan in the middle of the oven and cook for at least 6o minutes. If not totally tender add another 20 minutes and check.
Check if there is enough water in the pan halfway through. Now it is time to let the oven do the work and let it cook for 60-80 minutes until completely soft.
Check halfway through if more water is required. Then take a pot 1/3 filled with water and bring to a boil. Put a bamboo steamer on the pot.
Take your bao buns and put these in the steamer. Let it sit for 5 minutes until soft. Take a big tablespoon of spicy pork and scoop it into a bao bun.
Return the pork bao buns to the steamer. It will stay warm and it is a decorative way to present at dinner.
This recipe tastes amazing with Chinese steamed buns as a canapé or appetizer. You can easily make these buns yourself.
But it also tastes great as a complete meal for dinner with Basmati rice and vegetables.
How To Make Pork Bao Buns In A Slow Cooker
Spicy Pork in the slow cooker is an even simpler way to prepare the pork. Take all of the ingredients except for the pork and put it in your slow cooker.
Stir with a wooden spoon. Then add the meat and turn it a couple of times to cover the meat with the sauce mixture.
Close the lid and choose from these options:
- High – turn your slow cooker or Crockpot to this option and set it to 3 hours
- Low – turn your slow cooker and set the pan to 6 hour
Set the pan and forget about it. Do other things that make you happy your pan will take care of the rest.
Prepare the buns the same way as described above and fill the buns with soft pork. Your recipe is ready to serve.
Delicious Chinese Recipe
This spicy pork tastes just like the meat inside the first bak pau I ever had. Which was in Amsterdam when I was 8 years old.
We went shopping in maybe the smallest Chinese Toko in the city. All kinds of different scents and smells came our way when we walked into the Toko.
I never heard or seen anything like this bak pau. We took 4 home and warmed them in a steamer pan. The outside was soft and fluffy.
The pork meat was spicy and full of flavor. We had to cover it with sweet soy sauce and my first bite was like a taste of heaven.
Ever since I have been trying to perfect this recipe over the years. Trying to recreate the taste of the pork in that bun and finally, I created the perfect recipe.
Now it is time to share it with you. All you need is to follow a few steps and an oven or slow cooker.

How to make pork bao buns
Slow cooked spicy soy pork with steam buns. Easy to make and super delicious. Want to know how to make pork bao buns? Lets get started
Ingredients
- 15 steamed Chinese buns
- 400-gram Fricandeau pork or pork belly
- ½ cup of water
- 4 tbsp gr soy sauce
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar/palm sugar
- 1 tbsp of honey
- 1 tbsp apple vinegar
- 1 onion
- 1 shallot
- 2 garlic cloves
- 2 tbsp sriracha
- 1 chili pepper for decorating
- 1 spring onion for decorating
- salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat a pan and preheat oven at 400℉
- Add sugar and ½ cup water and stir to combine
- Now add soy, hoisin, sriracha, honey, and apple cider vinegar. Combine until dissolved
- When combined add the onion and shallots
- When softened add the Ficandeau pork or pork belly. Stir to coat the meat
- Add the water and let it boil before putting the pan in the oven
- Cook for at least 60 minutes if not tender add 20 more minutes
- Check if enough water else add water halfway through the cooking time
- Put the bao buns in a steamer for 5 minutes until they are soft
- Take a spoon and scoop meat into the buns
- Now you are ready to serve

02/01/2018 at 8:18 pmAfter seeing those delicious buns I followed to the pork recipe. I’m in Canada and have never heard of Fricandeau pork. Is it from a particular strain of pigs, a cut, a method of preparation before it’s cooked? I’d like to know more. Thank you.

Fricandeau meat is like tenderloin and a skinny part of the pig. As it cooks it get really tender and soft that is why I use it for this recipe. It should almost fall apart. Hope this helps.
