I consider Halloween to be the big kick-off to the holiday season — a.k.a. baking season.

This means spending lots of time in the kitchen baking up delicious Halloween treats for my family. The great thing about baking with family is that it doesn’t only end with a delicious treat, but it also can create wonderful memories that last a lifetime.

This Halloween cupcake recipe is great to make with the kids.

But no worries if you don’t have any kids. Adults will totally get a kick out of these creepy Halloween cupcakes as well. I mean who doesn’t want to eat spider webs?

The cupcakes themselves are easy to make. Start with cupcakes made with your favorite cupcake recipe, or with a boxed cake mix.

Then the real magic comes from how we will decorate the cupcakes.

Ingredients & Supplies

This section includes ingredient notes and substitution options. Get all measurements, ingredients, and instructions in the printable recipe card at the end of this post.

White candy melts, black candy melts, chocolate cupcakes, chocolate frosting, black sanding sugar, cupcakes liners, and regular and peanut M&Ms.

First, let’s take a look at what you will need to make this spider dessert.

How to Make Spiderweb Cupcakes

Step 1: Frost cupcakes with chocolate frosting.

Step 2: Melt white candy melts per package directions and transfer to a small plastic bag with the tip cut off for piping (or use piping bags). Pipe spider webs onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Make the webs a bit larger than the cupcake tops. Allow to cool completely and set.

Step 3: Melt the black candy melts and add to another baggie. Use this to pipe spiders onto another sheet of parchment paper. I started with a dime-sized dot and then added 4 legs on each side.

Step 4: Sprinkle the black sugar over the spiders and place a chocolate candy in the center.

Step 5: Once the spider and web are completely set, peel them off the paper and place them carefully onto the cupcakes. First, gently press the web into the frosting and then top it with the spiders.

I hope that you enjoy this fun and delicious Halloween treat.

Recipe variations

Switch up the colors. Who says a spider can’t be hot pink or lime green? Switch it up by using different colors of candy melts to make the spiders and their webs.

Switch up the flavors. Feel free to play around with the flavors of the cupcakes themselves and the frosting, too. For example, vanilla frosting with strawberry cupcakes sound delish (and would be great paired with pretty pink spider webs!).
